Syracuse Responds
SU Community Steps Up to “Keep ’em ’Cuse”
In the fall of 2008, the global economic crisis was having a tremendous impact on hundreds of SU students and their families. Whether it was due to job losses, dwindling college funds, or a tightening student loan market, many found that, without additional financial aid, they wouldn’t be able to return to campus for the spring semester.
Syracuse University took immediate action. In addition to cost-cutting measures that reallocated more dollars to student aid, we appealed to SU alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff to join in The Syracuse Responds Initiative—an effort to raise more funds for financial aid by January 31, 2009.
Syracuse Responds Is a Success!
As always, the SU community stepped up to the challenge. Gifts totaling $1,028,160 helped us provide additional financial aid to 426 current students, many of whom could not have returned to campus otherwise.
Meet just a few of the students helped by additional financial aid, and hear from SU’s director of scholarships and student aid.

Final Stats on the Syracuse Responds Campaign
Here’s the wrap-up, as of February 15, 2009:
At last count, more than 80% of our students depend on financial aid to meet the cost of attending SU. Together with our Syracuse Responds donors, we were able to provide, in total, more than $160 million in financial aid during the 2008-09 academic year, ensuring that students with the drive, talent, and determination to succeed had a place on SU’s campus.
