Inclusive Campus Initiative
Syracuse University is a global leader in inclusion, advocating for and welcoming all qualified students, faculty, and staff. The Inclusive Campus Initiative for people with disabilities involves all aspects of SU’s operations, every school and college, and 10 campuses across four continents.
The initiative is more than providing support services and removing physical barriers. Funds are also sought to place full-time faculty in every school and college to focus on disability within their primary fields of study, such as public policy or architecture. The first such position is the Lawrence B. Taishoff Professor of Inclusive Education in the School of Education.
The initiative also seeks to provide:
- New higher education opportunities for students with severe cognitive difficulties, such as Down syndrome and autism.
- A disability technology research center to advance the state of the art in everything from hearing aids and wheelchairs to communication devices and vehicle controls.
- Full support for disabled veterans as part of the SU’s new Institute for Veterans and Military Families.
Planning is underway to design, fund, and launch each of these components. For more information, contact David Murray at 315.443.2537 or drmurray@syr.edu.
One of the goals of the
Inclusive Campus Initiative
is to attract more full-time faculty
in fields of study that have a
disability focus, like Wendy Harbour,
the Lawrence B. Taishoff Professor
for Inclusive Education in the
School of Education.
